The Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) is set to pay tribute to the outstanding contributions of Ravindra Jadeja and Cheteshwar Pujara to Indian cricket. This acknowledgment will coincide with the unveiling of the stadium's new name, now rebranded as the Niranjan Shah Stadium, scheduled for February 14.
SCA President Jaydev Shah expressed the association's intention to honor Pujara and Ravindra during the ceremony commemorating the stadium's renaming. The decision to rename the stadium comes as a recognition of Niranjan Shah's significant contributions to cricket administration.
Cheteshwar Pujara recently joined the elite 100-Test club, becoming the thirteenth Indian player to achieve this milestone. In parallel, Ravindra Jadeja's exceptional performances across different formats have propelled him to the top spot in the ICC Test all-rounder rankings. Both players, hailing from the Saurashtra region, will be celebrated for their remarkable achievements in the sport.
Commenting on Pujara's absence from the squad for the remaining England Tests, Jaydev Shah expressed his sentiments, acknowledging the ideal scenario of having both local talents on the field. He emphasized that team selections are integral to the game, and while he can't comment on Pujara not playing, having him in Rajkot would have been a source of immense pride for the region.
While Pujara will miss the upcoming matches, Ravindra Jadeja has been included in the squad for the remaining Tests, pending clearance from the BCCI medical team after missing the second Test due to injury.
“Ravindra is still making Saurashtra very proud. I heard that he is injured, and though I don't have detailed information, he is likely to attend the function. We will felicitate him for being the world's best Test all-rounder,” remarked Jaydev Shah, expressing optimism about Jadeja's presence at the felicitation ceremony.
The SCA has extended invitations to Jadeja and his family, anticipating their attendance at the event. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah will officiate the unveiling of the stadium's new name on the eve of the third Test match. Invitations have been extended to top BCCI officials, dignitaries, and both Indian and English players participating in the Test series, making the event a momentous occasion for Indian cricket.
