Joe Root's struggle to make a significant impact with the bat against India has been evident in the two Tests played so far. Despite his best efforts to score runs quickly, he has faced the disappointment of losing his wicket without leaving a mark. The series stands at 1-1, and the former England player, Michael Vaughan, is advising Root to abandon the notion of playing attacking cricket, emphasizing the need for a return to a more traditional style of play.
In the four innings played, Root's scores have been 29, 2, 5, and 16, and his attempt at a left-handed practice before the second Test did not yield the desired results. Vaughan, in his commentary for the UK Telegraph, stressed that Root does not need to adopt a Bazball approach to be successful. He urged Root to play his natural game and emphasized that the Bazball mindset seems to have taken over, adversely affecting Root's performance.
Despite being acknowledged as one of the best batters against spinners in England's history, alongside Graham Gooch, Root's recent performances have frustrated Vaughan. The former player expressed concern about Root throwing away his wicket and believes that England cannot defeat India if Root continues to play in a manner inconsistent with his capabilities.
Vaughan highlighted missed opportunities for England, citing the Ashes last year as an example. While acknowledging England's overall positive performance under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, he cautioned against letting the Bazball mentality lead to missed chances, potentially jeopardizing their chances in the ongoing series against India. Vaughan believes that England, with smart batting, can secure victory in India after their last triumph in 2012.
