Star cricketer Virat Kohli has opted out of participation in the third and fourth Tests against England, delivering a blow to the Indian cricket team's lineup in Rajkot and Ranchi. Kohli, a vital middle-order player and former captain, will be sorely missed in these crucial matches. There is also uncertainty surrounding his availability for the fifth Test in Dharamsala, commencing on March 6, a factor that selectors will consider when finalizing the squad for the concluding three Tests.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced Kohli's withdrawal from the initial two Tests on January 22, citing "personal reasons." Since then, the BCCI has not issued further updates on Kohli's situation. The initial statement emphasized Kohli's dedication to representing the country but highlighted that specific personal situations necessitated his full attention.
KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, who missed the second Test in Vizag, are in the process of recovering and are expected to be available for selection. Their fitness is currently being evaluated at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. Although the final assessment from the NCA physio is pending, ESPNcricinfo reports suggest a positive outlook for both players. With a week remaining before the third Test, India is optimistic about Rahul and Jadeja obtaining fitness clearance and contributing to the team's efforts.
Rahul, who filled the No. 4 slot in Kohli's absence, and Jadeja, who impressed in the first Test but suffered a hamstring injury, played pivotal roles in India's performance. Their potential return would strengthen the middle order, providing valuable experience to the batting lineup.
Mohammed Siraj, rested as a precaution after the first Test, is set to make a comeback for the Rajkot Test. His return will enhance the bowling unit, which heavily relied on Jasprit Bumrah's outstanding performance to secure victory in the second Test. Bumrah, recently back from a stress fracture, is likely to be managed carefully to ensure a sustainable workload.
Following a disappointing defeat in the first Test, India levelled the five-Test series at 1-1 with a comeback win in Vizag. The upcoming Tests in Rajkot and Ranchi will play a crucial role in determining the series outcome before the final Test in Dharamsala on March 8.
Former South African captain and Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammate AB de Villiers, in a video on his YouTube channel, disclosed that Kohli is taking time off to be with his family for the birth of his second child. De Villiers emphasized the importance of family time for Kohli, stating that personal matters take precedence, and lauded Kohli for making the right decision despite being missed by the team.
