Delhi Capitals head coach, Ricky Ponting, recently discussed the uncertain status of star player Rishabh Pant ahead of the IPL 2024 season. While Pant is hopeful of enduring the entire season, Ponting remains sceptical about his ability to lead the team or take on wicket-keeping duties. This uncertainty stems from the injuries Pant sustained in a life-threatening accident in 2022, an event that left him questioning his survival.
Ponting, who has recently taken on the role of head coach for Washington Freedom, shared Pant's eagerness to contribute to Delhi Capitals. However, the coach emphasized the lack of clarity regarding Pant's role and fitness during a statement made at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Despite Pant showcasing confidence in his return, Ponting pointed out the six-week time frame remaining before the start of IPL 2024. He highlighted Pant's active presence on social media, where he shares fitness updates. However, Ponting expressed reservations about Pant's ability to resume wicket-keeping duties, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding this crucial aspect of his role.
Ponting explained that if he were to ask Pant, the dynamic player would be ready to take on all matches as a wicket-keeper. However, the coach remains cautiously optimistic, recognizing the unpredictability of Pant's situation. Pant, a key player and captain for the team was sorely missed during IPL 2023, further emphasizing the significance of his potential return.
Reflecting on Pant's journey over the past 12-13 months, Ponting acknowledged the harrowing accident and the challenges Pant has overcome. The coach highlighted Pant's luck in surviving the ordeal and returning to the game. Expressing a mix of hope and caution, Ponting stated the importance of keeping fingers crossed for Pant's successful comeback, even if it means managing his participation in a limited number of matches.
If Pant is deemed unfit for leadership, Ponting confirmed that David Warner would resume captaincy duties. Despite concerns about Pant's status, Ponting expressed contentment with the current team, citing the strengths of overseas players such as Harry Brook, Mitchell Marsh, and David Warner. He outlined their respective roles in the batting order, with Marsh and Warner occupying top positions and Brook serving as the finisher.
Additionally, Ponting praised the bowling unit, comprising Anrich Nortje, Jhye Richardson, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav. Despite confidence in the team's composition for IPL 2024, the coach acknowledged the team's underperformance in the preceding two years. As the season approaches, Ponting remains optimistic about the potential of the Delhi Capitals, with a keen eye on Pant's recovery and contribution to the team's success.
