Ranji Trophy: Ishan Kishan still not playing Ranji matches

Ishan Kishan finds himself amid scrutiny, currently undergoing training at the Kiran More Academy while persistently overlooking the counsel of India's head coach Rahul Dravid regarding participation in the Ranji Trophy. Despite a prime opportunity to stake his claim, especially with KS Bharat struggling in the ongoing IND vs ENG Test series, Ishan's focus remains on training, having left the India camp during the South Africa tour. Unfortunately, his efforts have not resonated well with selectors, and as the T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, Ishan fails to make a compelling impression.

Facing a stern message from the selectors and head coach Rahul Dravid, Ishan Kishan is unequivocally informed that engaging in competitive cricket is a prerequisite for selection. However, the Jharkhand youngster is noticeably absent from the Jharkhand vs Haryana match commencing on February 9, raising questions about his commitment to meeting the eligibility criteria set by the team management.

Rahul Dravid's post-match press conference after the IND vs ENG 2nd Test was marked by an uncharacteristic bluntness, with a clear directive to Ishan Kishan – play some cricket, be it domestic or IPL 2024, to be considered for selection. Dravid emphasized that while there is flexibility in the choice of the cricket format, Ishan needs to actively engage in the game to make a comeback. The onus, according to Dravid, lies with Ishan, and the team remains in contact with him.

Although Dravid stated that playing domestic cricket is not mandatory, it remains the sole form of competitive cricket available for Ishan to participate in. With the ongoing Ranji Trophy preceding IPL 2024, the inference is apparent – Ishan Kishan must feature in the Ranji Trophy to align with the selectors' expectations.

However, the Jharkhand State Cricket Association remains uncertain about Ishan's plans, mirroring the defiance displayed by former India captain MS Dhoni, who similarly disregarded selectors' calls to play domestic cricket. While Ishan Kishan's actions reflect a certain level of defiance, stemming from his dissatisfaction with being benched during the T20I series against South Africa in favor of Jitesh Sharma, the BCCI maintains that he is in contact with the team management.

A senior BCCI official dismissed rumors of Ishan's discontent, asserting that the team has a plan for his return, and his current actions align with that plan. The official further emphasized that Ishan's contractual obligations are known, and there is no indication of unhappiness within the team. Despite these assurances, Ishan Kishan's decision to disregard the advice of selectors and the head coach may not be conducive to his own aspirations, particularly since he is not sidelined due to injury.
