Rahul Dravid's post-match press conference after the IND vs ENG 2nd Test was marked by an uncharacteristic bluntness, with a clear directive to Ishan Kishan – play some cricket, be it domestic or IPL 2024, to be considered for selection. Dravid emphasized that while there is flexibility in the choice of the cricket format, Ishan needs to actively engage in the game to make a comeback. The onus, according to Dravid, lies with Ishan, and the team remains in contact with him.
Although Dravid stated that playing domestic cricket is not mandatory, it remains the sole form of competitive cricket available for Ishan to participate in. With the ongoing Ranji Trophy preceding IPL 2024, the inference is apparent – Ishan Kishan must feature in the Ranji Trophy to align with the selectors' expectations.
However, the Jharkhand State Cricket Association remains uncertain about Ishan's plans, mirroring the defiance displayed by former India captain MS Dhoni, who similarly disregarded selectors' calls to play domestic cricket. A senior BCCI official dismissed rumors of Ishan's discontent, asserting that the team has a plan for his return, and his current actions align with that plan. The official further emphasized that Ishan's contractual obligations are known, and there is no indication of unhappiness within the team. Despite these assurances, Ishan Kishan's decision to disregard the advice of selectors and the head coach may not be conducive to his own aspirations, particularly since he is not sidelined due to injury.
